The Ballard Locks were built some 100 years ago to connect, then “working” lakes Union and Washington to Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. It was an engineering marvel at the time, dropping lake levels by nine feet. Today, commerce on the lakes is all but gone and those nine feet have become front yards to some of the most posh homes you’ll find anywhere. Traffic through the locks now is mostly recreational. Here's a video of a typical weekend of the Ballard Locks in operation. It's a hoot!!
